At the event where Viettel announced the wide-scale commercial deployment of 5G Open RAN base stations “Make in Vietnam, Made by Viettel,” Oh Hyung Kwon, Senior Vice President and President of Asia Pacific (APAC) at Qualcomm, shared: “The journey to commercialize Viettel and Qualcomm’s 5G Open RAN network began in 2019 when Qualcomm President Alex Rogers met with Vietnam’s Minister of Information and Communications, Nguyen Manh Hung, in Hanoi, initiating this groundbreaking partnership. Since then, strategic discussions with Viettel Group Chairman and CEO Tao Duc Thang, Viettel Group Deputy CEO Nguyen Dinh Chien, Viettel High Tech General Director Nguyen Vu Ha, and Qualcomm leaders, including myself, have helped shape our shared vision to bring transformative 5G experiences to Vietnam.”
The launch of Viettel’s self-developed Open RAN-compliant products, built on Qualcomm’s DU and RU platforms within a commercial network, marks a significant milestone for both Viettel and Vietnam.
