The most unique aspect of Viettel’s 5G is that it is produced with Viettel’s own equipment

Month 10,  15/2024

One of the most unique aspects of Viettel’s 5G network is its use of “Make in Vietnam” technology, with all components, from radio and transmission equipment to core network devices, being researched, developed, and manufactured by Viettel. Viettel High Technology’s 5G network coverage in headquarters and Viettel Ha Nam has achieved impressive speeds of 663Mbps and 870Mbps, respectively.

On October 15, 2024, Viettel celebrated its 20th anniversary of officially offering mobile services by launching its 5G network, an event that also commemorates the 80th anniversary of the Vietnam People’s Army. Viettel is the first company in Vietnam to officially provide 5G services.

Attending the event were Senior Lieutenant General Pham Hoai Nam, Member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party and Vice Minister of National Defense; Deputy Minister of Information and Communications Pham Duc Long; and Ho Sy Hung, Vice Chairman of the State Capital Management Committee. Viettel’s Chairman and CEO, Major General Tao Duc Thang, along with other senior leaders and staff, were present.

Just six months after obtaining its license for the 2,600 MHz frequency, Viettel’s 5G network is now operational with over 6,500 BTS stations, covering 100% of provincial capitals, industrial zones, tourist areas, ports, airports, hospitals, and universities in all 63 provinces. With speeds reaching 700Mbps to 1Gbps—10 times faster than 4G—and almost zero latency, Viettel’s 5G network operates on both NSA (non-standalone) and SA (standalone) architectures.

During the event, Viettel Chairman Tao Duc Thang highlighted Viettel’s journey from initially adopting 2G, 3G, and 4G technologies years after their global introduction, to now being among the pioneers in 5G, placing Vietnam alongside leading countries in deploying cutting-edge technology. Viettel’s mastery of core network technology has positioned Vietnam as one of the top five nations capable of producing 5G network equipment, following Sweden, Finland, China, and South Korea.

Ha Minh Tuan, Deputy General Director of VTNet, emphasized the uniqueness of Viettel’s 5G network, citing the integration of end-to-end “Make in Vietnam” equipment. Over 50% of the core network infrastructure, he noted, is now produced by Viettel. This achievement marks a new milestone in Vietnam’s telecommunications sector, underscoring the nation’s technological independence.

At the event, Viettel High Technology showcased its 5G ecosystem near the main hall entrance. Many former leaders of Viettel visited the exhibition area, reminiscing about the early days of BTS station setup and optimization. Today, Viettel’s network map reflects the contributions of its engineers and their role in establishing Vietnam’s telecom independence.

Leaders from various agencies, partners, media outlets, and Viettel customers attended the event. Among them, representatives from the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group expressed interest in Viettel’s 5G Private network, particularly for its potential use in remote, disaster-prone mining areas where conventional telecommunications are often disrupted. They engaged with Viettel’s High Technology about costs and operations, learning that Viettel’s 5G Private network could be more cost-effective and adaptable than foreign solutions, with rapid customization available to meet specific customer needs.

The 5G system, developed by Viettel High Technology, is now operational at Viettel’s headquarters, while Viettel Ha Nam has hosted a program for customers to experience 5G speeds of up to 870Mbps using the company’s domestic technology.
